Easter greetings from Björnrike, the hilly side of Sweden! Thanks to a tiny Easter break from school, me and Nuppu packed our bags and traveled half the country in order to enjoy some quality time with our family. Our days at the cabin consisted from sun, snow, ski and sauna.

Our journey from Skåne to Vemdalen came via Stockholm, where we checked out Södermalm and had a little rest before continuing the way to North with my husband and parents in law.

I´ve visited the capital  few times before, but this time i got to experience it from a different angle. The thing is, as new course started just couple weeks ago, we got to read an interesting book about cities and it has turned out to be a great source of inspiration for traveling cities. The book is called Cities of Tomorrow, and it takes its reader to a journey through the planning histories of cities across the globe. It opens eyes to see multiple layers of ideologies, policies and power consisting the unique legacies of cities.

To be honest, before the book i haven´t put much of effort on figuring out what kind of process of creation lies behind places. For me traveling mainly has been about enjoying beautiful parks and alleys not to mention exploring restaurants, cafés and just trying to blend in the urban culture and watch the world go by. But now i get to go back with my memories to remember the rats in Rome, the smog in Delhi, the pollution in Bangkok and to understand that this small stuff you see as a tourist tells stories about societies with its madmen, good men and hopeful men. And when in Stockholm, i did not only see the stunning sea side and incredibly stylish Stockholmers but also wandered around SoFo wondering the societies living in the area long before all the hipsters moved in and made it hot. To me that´s exactly the greatest thing about academia; it totally makes one see things from different perspectives!

I´m glad to say that even though the course books are again (!) spot on, we surely have some other stuff to look forward to. We will do some workshopping with Copenhagen Business School (neat!) and we are also about to attend a seminar at Pärnu with bunch of other Master students studying Tourism. So we get hands on experience about Copenhagen, Tallinn and Pärnu + receive the added benefit of mingling and networking during our course about place and destination development.
