A New Life in Sweden =)

by Claudia

On this cozy Sunday evening, I am getting sentimental and feel it’s time to look back a little bit to the 14 months I have already spent here in Helsingborg. Many of you might know what it feels like, coming to a new country, not knowing anyone, not understanding the language and maybe even starting a completely new life. It is not the easiest to leave the safe nest called home, and a culture shock can not always be avoided.

Two months ago, about 40 new international students arrived in Helsingborg, coming from all over the world. I believe it has not been easy for all of them to get accustomed to the new culture, with some of them living abroad for the first time in their lives.

I was lucky to be involved in a project group by the student organisation Agora, which organised the international introduction week, which was actually also open to all new Master students, whether Swedish or international. This has been a great experience! It does not just increase your organisational skills, but also intercultural and social competence and it was a great way of making new friends. I personally also always am excited to taste their local food 😉

If you are a student here in Helsingborg, no matter if international or Swedish, and you would like to get in touch with the international YOU, don’t be afraid to get involved (Agora is currently looking for a new project leader and team).

This was clearly one of the best experiences in my life and I am so happy to have met so many new people!

During the introduction week, we organised for example a treasure hunt through town, socializing games, a trip to Malmö, a pub crawl, a ”turning” on the ferry as well as a lovely Sittning at the end of the week, where we introduced the Swedish culture (for those of you who are not familiar with this, it’s a very nice dinner party).

It has been amazing! Here are some impressions:

The greatest reward of all was to see all the happy faces during the events and to hear things like ”I am not homesick at all”! If you have ever been living abroad, this might be the project for you, or you might just now simply realize that there are great opportunities here in Helsingborg to get in touch with people from all over the world! 🙂
